Orange cones, construction signs: Davenport projects affect businesses

Construction projects are popping up in Davenport. And that means that trying to get around has been pretty tough for some drivers.

Locations include River Drive in Davenport, which has seen lane closures. Westbound River Drive was closed between Bridge Avenue and Federal Street because Davenport Public Works was relocating its water service.

Other city projects include a sewer lining project on Mound Street in the Village of East Davenport. The project started on Monday. The street is closed between East River Drive and East 11th Street. Businesses are still open around the area, but some owners are not happy with this project, especially after dealing with the effects of last year’s flood.

“The biggest frustration is when things happen without our knowledge. A flood coming in, we kind of have some knowledge of that in the coming days. This, for instance, is a situation where we were not warned of the road being closed,” said Five Star Salon owner Dustin Roelle.

Roelle says this road closure is negatively impacting his business.

“Our issues usually lie with clients being a little bit late. They come up to an intersection and not knowing it’s closed, they have to take a little reroute,” Roelle said. “It’s almost comical at this point to show up and see it, and just be like ‘Here we go again,’ because I know the reaction from our customers: ‘Man, the odds are stacked against you when this happens.'”

Looking ahead to March 18, work will begin on a roundabout leading to Arsenal Island. That will go in at 2nd and LeClaire streets in Davenport.

As more construction projects develop into the summer, Our Quad Cities News will provide updates on how you’ll be impacted by them.
